मुहावरे एवं लोकोक्तियाँ (Idioms and Proverbs)

 1. अक़्लमंद को इशारा काफी - A word to the wise
    Example:- I can't explain to you, a word to the wise. 

2. अंधेरे में छलांग लगाना - To leap in the dark
 Explain:- Signing a contract without reading the terms and conditions is like leaping in the dark.
 
3. अन्धो में काना राजा - A figure among ciphers.
Example:- He is very weak in studies yet he stood first in the class. A figure among ciphers. 
 
4. अकेला चना भाड़ नहीं फोड़ता - One swallow does not make a summer.
Example:- Operating the company is a difficult task. One swallow does not make a summer.
 
5. अपनी गली में कुत्ता भी शेर होता है - A dog is a lion in his own den.
Example:- He cannot dare to challenge you in here because he has no courage. But, he will definitely challenge in his own place, this is what is called 'a dog is lion in his own den'.
 
 6. अपने दही को कौन खट्टा कहता है - Every porter praises his own pot.
Example - It is public that will point out negative points of the scheme. Every porter praises his own pot. 
 
7. अपने मुंह मियां मिट्ठू बनाना - To blow one's own trumpet/ To beat one's own drum.
Example:- Those who blow their own trumpet cannot be trusted.

8. अब पच्छताए होत क्या जब चिड़िया चुग गई खेत - It is no use crying over spilt milk. 
Example:- He failed the exam last year and cried a log. But he had no option because it's no use crying over a spilt milk. 
 
9. अति सर्वत्र वर्ज्येत् - Excess of everything is bad.
Example -  Don't eat too much or else you will have acidity in the stomach because excess of everything is bad.

10. आँख का तारा होना - an apple of the eye.
Example - She is an apple of the eye of her father. 

11. आँख खुलना - to open one's eyes - to learn lessons.
Example - The mistake he did has opened his eyes.

12. आँखों में धूल झोंकना - To pull wool over a person's eyes - to deceive, cheat.
Example - He pulled wool over his wife's eyes for a long time.

13. आग से खेलना - To play with fire.
Example - To go into a lion's den is like playing with fire. 
 
14. उंगली पकड़कर पहुंचा पकड़ना - Give him an inch and he will take ell - to make small concession and they will make advantage of you. 
Example:- Don't let strangers in your house or else they will occupy the house.

The Lichchavi Kingdom (C 450 CE to C 750 CE)

About The Licchavi Kingdom The Lichchavis were the most powerful of the eight clans of Vajji janapad . Their capital was at Vaishali (Bihar).  They were an Indo-Aryan tribe who conquered the territory of the Maha-Videha kingdom and temporarily occupied the Videha capital of Mithila . Given to rising power of Magadha empire , Lichchavis established their republic in the southern part of Maha-Videha kingdom until the marginal location of Vaishali , which was their largest city and capital. To the south of Vaishali was situated the kingdom of Magadha with which relations of Vaishali were initially good. Chellana , the Lichchavi princes from Vaishali was married to Magadha king Bimbisara . Chellana was the second wife of Bimbisara. She gave birth to Ajatshatru , who did not care about relations and invaded and annexed Vaishali in Magadha empire. The Gupta Empire (319 AD - 540 AD): Extension of the Empire; Development of Language and Literature; Art and Architecture.

 The Gupta Empire (319 AD - 540 AD) Gupta empire emerged on the ruins of the Kushan kingdom.  The empire orginated in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and expanded in almost whole India excluding interior south and Kashmir.  Prayag was the nerve centre of their administration.  They were originally Vaishyas . The founder of the Gupta empire was Srigupta .  The empire witnessed three most important rulers - Chandragupta-I, Samudragupta and Chandragupta-II .  Extent of the Empire Three Gupta rulers  Chandragupta-I, Samudragupta snd Chandragupta-II Contributed the most to the expansion of the empire.
